Smart Ways to Give
Save on your taxes and help support HRS members as they work to improve the lives of patients with heart rhythm disorders. There are several ways to plan your giving that are tax advantageous as well.
A Donor-Advised Fund (DAF), is a charitable giving program that allows you to combine the most favorable tax benefits with the flexibility to support HRS members and mission to end death for people with heart rhythm disorders.
Donor-Advised Funds allow donors to make an initial $10,000 contribution into a charitable investment account (getting an immediate tax deduction) and pay out donations to nonprofits over time. They are an excellent way to simplify your charitable giving and still achieve your strategic philanthropic goals. Donors should consult with their tax advisors prior to making a gift.
Are you over the age of 70 1/2? Do you have an Individual Retirement Account (IRA)? If you answered “Yes” to both questions, you can make a Qualified Charitable Donation (QCD) up to $100,000 directly from your IRA to the Heart Rhythm Society! A QCD can help you reach your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) without having to pay income taxes on the amount of your donation. You save on your taxes and help people with heart rhythm disorders.
Contact your plan administrator to request your RMD and elect a QCD naming the Heart Rhythm Society. You can use the sample letter to customize your information and send it via email or postal mail.
Did you know that gifts of stock can give you a tax benefit even in a fluctuating market? These gifts can reduce the capital gains you would pay without changing your portfolio.
Donating a charitable gift of stock or mutual fund shares is a great way to improve the lives of those with heart rhythm disorders and receive an end-of-the-year tax deduction. Some of the most favorable tax benefits are generated by contributions of appreciated, long-term, capital-gain securities.
You can donate shares of stock directly to a nonprofit of your choice or liquidate the stock into a Donor Advised Fund and issue donations, called grants, from that account.
In addition to receiving a charitable deduction for the full, fair market value of such a gift, the donor does not pay any potential tax on the capital gains of the gift and any sales commission that would be payable upon the sale of the assets.
Honorariums are typically considered taxable income. However, donating an honorarium directly to a qualified nonprofit organization, like the Heart Rhythm Society, can potentially reduce the donor’s taxable income, further maximizing the impact of the donation (see IRS guidelines on when an honorarium can be donated to charity).
Are you interested in supporting HRS and potentially lowering your taxable income? Use this downloadable form to easily respond to requests for your participation and express your desire to redirect the honorarium to the Heart Rhythm Society.
