April 1, 2025 – On March 24th, CMS made two important announcements regarding the 2024 Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) performance year:
- Extension of the 2024 MIPS Data Submission Deadline – MIPS eligible clinicians and their representatives can now submit and update their 2024 MIPS data until April 14, 2025, 8 pm ET (rather than March 31). Note that this extension will delay CMS’s mid-June timeline for releasing final scores and opening the Targeted Review process.
- Reopening of 2024 MIPS Extreme and Uncontrollable Circumstances (EUC) Exception Applications – CMS is reopening 2024 MIPS EUC Exception applications due to the ongoing national intravenous (IV) fluid shortage. The application will close April 14, 2025, at 8 pm ET. Note that CMS will only accept applications citing the shortage as the basis for requesting reweighting of MIPS performance categories. As an example, CMS cites situations where a practice’s administrative and support staff needed to focus on supply chains to support patients’ care, affecting their capacity to collect and prepare data for reporting. CMS plans to release an updated EUC Application Guide with more specific information by the end of March.
In the interim, additional information regarding both of these extensions is available for download through this CMS fact sheet.
HRA will keep its membership informed about the release of additional materials, as well as future announcements regarding the revised timeline for releasing final 2024 MIPS performance scores and submitting a Targeted Review request.
