Aetna Covers Pulsed Field Ablation (PFA) for Medically Necessary Indications, as Recommended by HRS

HRS efforts to secure reimbursement for PFA appeared to have achieved some success as Aetna revised the policy for Cardiac Catheter Ablation and Radioablation.

Reimbursement Updates

HRS efforts to secure reimbursement for PFA appeared to have achieved some success as Aetna revised the policy for Cardiac Catheter Ablation and Radioablation to note that pulsed field ablation is considered an equally effective alternative to standard radiofrequency ablation for medically necessary indications.

However, there is a conflicting statement in the policy listed under CPT code 93656 that the procedure is “not covered for pulsed field ablation.” HRS alerted the Aetna Clinical Policy Unit about the inconsistency in the policy and was informed that it will be corrected.
