Heart Rhythm Case Reports Articles
Upcoming Clinical Practice Document
The HRS Expert Consensus Statement of Arrhythmias in the Athlete: Evaluation, Treatment, and Return to Play will be published on May 17, 2024, during Heart Rhythm 2024.
Sports cardiology is a rapidly evolving field. In recent decades, the number of children and adults participating in organized and competitive sporting events such as marathons has increased exponentially. Understanding cardiac care of the athlete requires specialized expertise, as sports participation leads to changes that are both adaptive and potentially maladaptive, such as the increased incidence of atrial fibrillation that is well-documented in endurance athletes. Further, treatment decisions may be influenced by the desire to return to sports. Electrophysiologists are often the first line in identifying and treating athletes with cardiac disease and arrhythmias but have not yet taken the lead in providing clinical practice guidance for other cardiologists.
Smart Heart Sports Coalition
On March 27, 2023, the National Football League, along with major sports organizations and leading patient and health advocacy groups, announced the formation of The Smart Heart Sports Coalition to advocate for all 50 states to adopt evidence-based policies that will prevent fatal outcomes from Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) among high school students. HRS is a proud member of the NFL's Smart Heart Sports Coalition.
