December 19, 2024 – CMS recently announced a decision to expand the MIPS automatic Extreme and Uncontrollable Circumstances (EUC) exception for the 2024 performance year so that it applies to MIPS eligible clinicians in designated counties of Florida impacted by Hurricane Milton in October.
CMS previously announced that clinicians impacted by Hurricanes Helene (FL, GA, NC, SC, TN), Francine (LA), Debbie (FL) and Beryl (TX) would qualify for the automatic exception for the 2024 performance year.
As a reminder, impacted clinicians will be automatically identified by CMS and will have all four MIPS performance categories reweighted to 0%, which will result in a neutral payment adjustment for the 2026 MIPS payment year. However, if these clinicians submit data on two or more performance categories, they will be scored on those categories and receive a 2026 MIPS payment adjustment based on their 2024 final MIPS score.
The MIPS automatic EUC exception only applies to individuals and not group practices. Although group-level reporting is not required under MIPS, group practices may request reweighting by submitting an EUC application. EUC applications for the 2024 MIPS performance year are due December 31, 2024.
For more information, please review the 2024 MIPS Automatic EUC Policy Fact Sheet.
