AMA Releases Special CPT Coding Advice for COVID-19

Coding scenarios designed to help healthcare professionals apply best coding practices during the COVID-19 public health emergency

March 23, 2020

AMA released special coding advice for the COVID-19 public health emergency. Coding scenarios include telehealth services relating to COVID-19 testing for all patients. Such scenarios include when a patient:

  • Comes to the office for an E/M visit during which the patient is tested for COVID-19;
  • Receives a telehealth visit regarding COVID-19 and is directed to come to the physician's office or physician’s group practice site for testing; or,
  • Receives a virtual check-in/online visit regarding COVID-19 (not related to an E/M visit) and is directed to come to the physician's office for testing

AMA also released a quick-reference flowchart outlining CPT reporting for COVID-19 testing and a comprehensive review of the CMS payment policies and regulatory flexibilities related to COVID-19.
